Indianapolis is located in the center of the state on the White River. The city was founded in 1820 and settled by a mix of people including Germans, Irish, African-Americans, Italians, and Eastern Europeans. German-American architects designed many of the city’s curches, public buildings, and monuments. Indianapolis became Indiana’s third capital in 1825. The highlight of the downturn area is the capitol building, an impressive structure that was built using materials from Indiana. Not far from the capitol is Monument Circle, which has the 284 foot high Soldiers and Sailors Monument at its center. It’s topped by a statue of Victory, known as Miss Indiana. If you climb up to the observation deck, you’ll see a fantastic view of the city, it’s streets spread out in a wheel pattern from Monument Circle. At the base of the monument is the Colonel Eli Lilly Museum, which contains exhibits about Indianapolis during the Civil War. Indianapolis boasts many great attractions you’re sure to find several to love.
